Best Places to see Sloth Bear in India

Sloth bear is a medium-sized bear found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. They shelter in various habitats including tall grasslands, shrub forests, boulders, caves and forested lands.

They are the only bears that carry their young ones on their back for two to three years

Their gestation period is around six to seven months and the cubs are born mostly in caves, dens, or hollow areas where mother feeds them for 2 to 3 months.

There are four species of bears found in India. The Asiatic black bear, Himalayan Brown bear, Sun bear and the most commonly found Sloth bear.

Sloth bears are nocturnal animals. During day they sleep in dens, caves and cooler areas of river banks

They have a great sense for smell which helps them to find food, but have a poor hearing and visibility

Bears can sniff for about a mile of area. As per mammal standards, bears are considered to have primitive brains and sense of smell is the only developed feature. They are capable of finding out food both on and below surface.

Bears are fruit eating, insect eating and meat eating animals.

The detached lips of the bear to suck up the termites from their mounds are a feature unique to the bears. Bears loose two of their incisors at an early age, the gap so formed assists in the sucking.
