A beautiful gecko named after ‘Satpura Mountain Ranges’.
The scientific name of this species is ‘Eublipharis satpuraensis’. In Latin language, ‘Eu’ meaning true or good while ‘blephar’ meaning eyelid. The word ‘eublipharis’ means fully functional eyelids while ‘satpuransis’ refers to the ethnicity or the geographical location of its typical habitat. The common group name ‘Leopard Gecko’ refers to spotted pattern, predominantly shades of yellow and brown which are similar to a leopard.
This species was described in the year 2014.
Satpura Leopard Gecko is crepuscular (meaning nocturnal) in nature. Unlike other geckos from this group, this one lacks adhesive toe-pads that are helpful in climbing on straight surfaces.
Earlier it was considered that leopard geckos prefer dry regions since their ancestors have been evolved in deserted regions. But the new detailed studies of ‘Satpura leopard gecko’ have revealed that they prefer rocky grassland habitats. These geckos are aggressive hunters. They are very sturdy and have adapted to extreme weather conditions of Central Indian landscape.
Habitat loss, misconceptions or taboos associated with them and illegal exotic animal/pet trade are the current threats faces by these beautiful creatures.
